Adventures in Scrapbooking: Using Kits

It's not the contents, but how you use the kit to preserve your photos and memories that counts. The journey, the challenge, and the adventure of utilizing a scrapbook kit is just that - how to combine it with your own personal style and photos in ways that you are happy with. Whether you're working with a kit club's kit, one from the scrapbook aisle at the craft store, or making up your own, you will find a lot of fun and creative inspiration in this new six week course Adventures in Scrapbooking: Using Kits.

Instructor May Flaum is a veteran Big Picture teacher and long time crafter. May is author of Paper + Pixels: Scrapbook Layouts, has been published in numerous idea books and magazines, and has taught scrapbooking classes for years. Her 'no rules' approach, paired with a variety of layouts, helps students at all levels to take her ideas and make them their own. May will show you how to use purchased kits, how to build kits, and how to make the most of your stash of supplies. She is a highly active instructor, so expect to see her starting threads on the message board, commenting on the gallery, and encouraging you to e-mail her with questions and comments.

Each week May will create scrapbook layouts from a kit and share them, along with big tips, lessons, ideas, step-by-step instructions, bonus materials, and more. New challenges and a weekly sketch will be available in the handout each week for students, and a weekly prize drawing will be held on the message board. In addition, students can easily work at their own pace, and May's content is designed to be utilized long after class adding even more value to this class.

What you'll be doing:
This course is focused on scrapbook layouts, 12" x 12" layouts to be specific. Still, all of the ideas and most of the page designs can easily be converted to other sizes. May has designed this class so that it is flexible and can appeal to all levels and styles of scrapbookers.

How this works:
In each week's main handout May will share about a subject that can be utilized on any and all kits you use. Then she will share the week's sketch and challenges, and finally talk about the week's kit choice and share the layouts she created with it. Step-by-step instructions are included.
Want more? You'll get it! In addition to the main handouts, each week will have bonus material - an audio visual presentation or additional handout featuring more lessons, tips, and kits that May has created herself.

Syllabus:
Please note that substitutions are welcome, and purchasing is not necessary to participate in class. Students may work with any supplies they have on hand and can create their own kits if desired.

  • Week One: kit featured: Jenni Bowlin
  • Week Two: kit featured: The Girl's Loft
  • Week Three: kit featured: Cocoa Daisy
  • Week Four: kit featured: Katie Pertiet of Designer Digitals
Note: May will be utilizing this digital kit with paper products to create 'hybrid' layouts primarily using Microsoft Word and not Photoshop or other digital scrapbook software so that everyone can try. She will share some basic tutorials and ideas for bringing digital elements into your traditional pages. All projects she creates can easily be substituted with any paper product should you wish.
  • Week Five: kit featured: Scarlet Lime
  • Week Six: kit featured: Studio Calico

Additional kits will be created by May and shown throughout class in bonus handouts.
