[ gluemore
girl ] Good morning!
[ daisy10727 ] Good morning. Wow, glad I was checking for Thursday's
transcript, I totally forgot about this mornings chat
[ SusiB ] Good Morning...First time here...hope I can keep up with
you all...We got lots of nice wet snow last night..it's absolutely
beautiful outside right now!
[ ShellBelle76 ] hi everyone! not sure if anyone is actively chatting,
but thought i'd say hello
[ gluemore girl ] Hi everyone!
[ ShellBelle76 ] we have a ton of snow here too - state college,
pa.
[ daisy10727 ] Lots of snow here in NJ too, good day to stay in
& scrapbook
[ SusiB ] I'm in Indy...home of the Colts...hopefully Super Bowl
Champs tomorrow!
[ gluemore girl ] "I started flagging my album pages and got
stuck on pages w/my kids and their friends... hmmm... is that an
US page or a People we love page??? LOL!<br />
We were hoping to get the snow up here in CT but we are missing
it : ("
[ gluemore girl ] Sorry Susi, my ds is a Saints fan... we'll have
to agree to disagree!
[ ShellBelle76 ] gluemoregirl - i would go with People on that one
[ gluemore girl ] Yeah, I think that's what I was going to go with...
[ gluemore girl ] Hi Barb!
[ Crystal F ] I'm in coastal NC - it's cold and windy here, no snow,
but still perfect for scrapbooking
[ SusiB ] Gluemore girl...I'm not that big of a fan...but the DH
is!
[ SusiB ] How's the picture sorting going?
[ Barb in AK ] "Saints fan here, too. sorry :-)<br />
I'll be working tomorrow evening and will miss the festivities.
Oh well....I'm sure I'll hear every detail when I get home. ;-)"
[ gluemore girl ] I tried to start the picture sorting when I got
Photo Freedom book about 8mos ago... I have the albums and the drawers
and even have named the categories but have not sorted a thing!
That's why I'm here..
[ ShellBelle76 ] picture sorting is seriously slowgoing - i have
two kiddos (almost 4 and 2) and i also teach
[ ShellBelle76 ] i need to carve out more time to work on a daily
basis - but my 2 year old gets into everything
[ Crystal F ] I'm an alumni but I took most of last year off from
scrapping so I am trying to get organized again
[ ShellBelle76 ] right now my 4 year old is out with daddy shoveling
- i am going to park the 2 year old in front of dora and do some
photo sorting...
[ ShellBelle76 ] no excuses! just do it, right?? :) will report
back after 15 minutes to share my success ;)
[ ShellBelle76 ] call me on it if i show up prior to 7:05 PST ;)
[ gluemore girl ] LOL Shell!! I used to do the same thing sometimes
you HAD to!
[ SusiB ] I'm also working on sorting 30+ years worth...baby steps!
[ Annette33 ] Hello all!
[ gluemore girl ] Can we chat here anytime? Is this chat just for
us in the LOM class?
[ gluemore girl ] Hi Annette!
[ Annette33 ] I haven't begun doing anything, must make some kind
of dent this weekend. Found some storage albums at walmart for $9
[ Annette33 ] I have to head to Clovis, 30 minutes away, to shop
at Hobby Lobby today. A homebound student and I are starting to
scrap.
[ SusiB ] I still need to get storage albums...hopefully a few today!
[ stacy julian ] Good morning my lovely LOMers -- I'm here. Just
have to get some oatmeal soaking for Birchermuesli (we have company
in town) I'll be back and ready to chat in 5 minutes!
[ Annette33 ] anyone have her books?
[ SusiB ] I have Photo Freedom...Great Book!
[ gluemore girl ] Yes, I have Photo Freedom and The Big Picture
[ Buglet ] Wow! Are the albums at Walmart 3 ring?
[ Annette33 ] Buglet-yes, they are. In this town, Walmart is all
we have.
[ gluemore girl ] GM Stacy!!
[ Crystal F ] Just a heads up - beware some cheaper storage albums
- the pages aren't as well made and if you put a bunch of pictures
in each pocket they will come apart - I'm dealing with this now.
[ Buglet ] Crystal- good to know!
[ AprilFL ] Good morning ladies!!
[ gluemore girl ] Hey April!
[ SusiB ] Good Morning!
[ angeljade ] Good morning! :)
[ Simpkiss ] Good Morning everyone
[ evalyn ] Good morning, everyone!
[ Crystal F ] Good Morning!
[ Lynnek ] Good Morning
[ AprilFL ] What's everyone got planned for today (while we wait
for Stacy)?
[ denisecreates ] Good Morning everyone!
[ KristenMcC ] sorting photos
[ Tilly-Loo ] Good Morning, everyone! Hi April, Hi Stacy. This is
Margaret (Tilly-Loo is fine, too).
[ SusiB ] Shoppping for storage albums today!
[ Annette33 ] cheerleading clinic at 8 for my 8 year old. Trip to
Hobby Lobby
[ Lynnek ] Kid activities this morning and hopefully some photo
organizing and scrapping this afternoon.
[ Crystal F ] Scrapbooking is on my agenda today and laundry.
[ nonnysbooks ] Nonny is snowed in today, a good day to curl up
with my pictures
[ daisy10727 ] looking in the gallery I got ideas for a couple more
pages I'd like to make...if I can get the kids busy with something
[ AprilFL ] yay, Kristen! ;) Hey Tilly-Loo (a LOAD friend)!
[ Simpkiss ] sorting out my pictures
[ Tilly-Loo ] My plan for today.... LO for LOAD then sort sort sort
a bin of photos.
[ kimmiejd ] photo sorting and a haircut!!!
[ AprilFL ] annette, that sounds like fun - I love hobby lobby!
[ gluemore girl ] Getting ready for 25 teens coming to my house
tonight for dd's 15th bday party...shoot me now!
[ AprilFL ] nonny, that sounds about as wonderful as snowed in can
be!
[ Buglet ] Home Depot Kid's Workshop, meeting cabinet person (for
new scrap area) and working on photos!
[ KimberlyAnn ] I coach a competition dance team, competing this
afternoon.
[ Annette33 ] too bad it is a 30 minute drive,lol
[ AprilFL ] 25 TEENS?? gluemore girl, you're crazy!
[ angeljade ] Scrapbooking, house stuff and family time for me!
[ kellyd ] After chatting, I'm starting a home improvement project.
Painting...yeah!!
[ Tilly-Loo ] All plans are as kids allow.... hubby is at class
today, so it's anyone's guess what I'll really get done...
[ gluemore girl ] Did I mention, I had to pack up all my scrap stuff
and photos so she could have her party in my family room??? LOL
[ AprilFL ] good luck KimberlyAnn!
[ Tilly-Loo ] Gluemore, OH MY GOODNESS. Good luck with that!
[ Sabine H ] Good Morning everyone..... after this - I'm off to
work, gotta get caught up on a few things there .. though I know
I'll want to just dive into doing some more organizing of my photos...
darn work gets in the way of the fun!
[ denisecreates ] Having a date with my husband. We have a two year
old and a newborn...
[ gluemore girl ] not crazy April, INSANE!!
[ evalyn ] My girlies are coming over for the day--that means cupcakes
and dolls.
[ AprilFL ] lol, the things we do for our kids, right?
[ stacy julian ] OK. I'm here. How goes the flagging, the sorting,
the purging, the storing?
[ SusiB ] very slow...
[ AprilFL ] Sabine, isn't that the way it always is? Darn work!
[ gluemore girl ] ummmm... good... real... um... good..
[ nonnysbooks ] Trying to convince myself I really want to go through
1000 pics from daughters wedding and purge
[ Crystal F ] I'm working on it all right now - sorting and purging
while chatting
[ angeljade ] It's goind really well! I just keep at it in short
bursts throughout the day.
[ Tilly-Loo ] The sorting is taking over the tables of my house!
First the dining table, now the kitchen table.... pretty soon we'll
be eating off the floor for the sake of my photos.
[ stacy julian ] SusiB -- very slow (and steady) is acutally good.
I believe they say 'that wins the race' Is there anything I can
clarify for you?
[ gluemore girl ] started the flagging...
[ Annette33 ] the purging will feel good!
[ embracelife ] Good morning! I am back for my second year of LOM.
I gained so much the first time, but life crowded it out towards
the end. Can't wait, this series is life changing.
[ KimberlyAnn ] I also got stuck on wedding pictures
[ SusiB ] Thanks Stacy!
[ Tilly-Loo ] Resisting the urge to stop and scrap every "awesme"
photo I find.
[ Meggie ] The flagging was interesting. I hardly have any things
and Us didn't start until the baby was born. I am learning what
I didn't do and what I want to do
[ stacy julian ] Tilly-Loo -- who needs a table to eat on? Keep
up the good work, in a few days you should have the major sorting
done and be able to move back to just the dining room, right?
[ Annette33 ] I am looking forward to my girls looking through the
storage albums to see pics they have probably have never seen.
[ nonnysbooks ] I'm tempted to skip the wedding photos and move
on to the next year back in the stack of digi-photos so I don't
get bogged down
[ SusiB ] Stacy...Photo Freedom has been very helpful...
[ Tilly-Loo ] Yes, Stacy, that's the plan! Hope to have the kitchen
table back in operation by dinner tonight... we'll see!
[ Lynnek ] I am to the hard part. I am an alum and have done the
big chunks of photos that were easy. Now I am trying to identify
and place photos that are randomly stashed here and there.
[ stacy julian ] 1000 wedding photos --- here's my challenge. Pick
your BEST 100 and move forward. You can always go back.
[ gluemore girl ] "It's funny to go back through the photos
(even though they are pages that were already "scrapped")
and find more stories...<br />
that's the cool part of this process"
[ stacy julian ] Meggie -- YES!
[ Annette33 ] I will probably hace duplicates when I go through
my mom's stuff
[ nonnysbooks ] We had a wonderful photographer, and have the copyright
license, the 1000 are the ones he took
[ Tilly-Loo ] Gluemore, I totally agree! I see things in my photos
now that I never saw before. (Second year LOM)
[ Annette33 ] Mom and I scrapped together, and would get duplicates
for each other, when we developed the photos
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] I feel the same way too Gluemore. I love
that this process has already helped me "rediscover"
photos and memories I forgot I had.
[ stacy julian ] LynneK -- I'm right with you. I can't believe after
12 years I'm still finding photos stuck in bins and little piles
here and there -- it's CRAZY (good, right?)
[ kellyd ] I found that I never did any Everyday/Life stuff until
my daughter was born. Everything was travel and vacation.
[ embracelife ] I agree about the wedding photos. Redid my own album,
just kept the favorites and love it
[ nanarose ] I have lots of scenery from road trips we took, no
way to date. What do you suggest?
[ Heather Peet ] i just printed 3,000 wedding pictures - they are
in mountains for me to go through and PURGE - my goal is to get
down to 1,000 and bring that garbage bag straight out to the bin!
[ daisy10727 ] I know I have photos that I can't find, they're still
packed up from the last time we moved (6 years ago)
[ Lynnek ] You are right Stacy! I am finding some great photos that
I knew I had just didn't know were they went. They are treasures
that I was to get into my system for sure!!
[ embracelife ] nanarose, how about just memories of the trips?
generalize the dates "about 1980" etc
[ evalyn ] my digi photos are "pretty much" sorted
from the first time I took LOM in 2006 but I am having a hard time
with the printed photos pre-digi.
[ stacy julian ] "scrapbookenthusiast -<br />
Every year when LOM starts I wonder how many scrapbookers have actually
lost touch with their photos -- isn't it amazing? If we have lost
touch, imagine the rest of the human race. There is so much to be
learned from our pictures!"
[ gluemore girl ] Nana, how about "Where we've been"...
doesn't matter when..
[ Simpkiss ] I have found that I am not in many pictures so now
I will change that
[ Heather Peet ] i just did upload dumps onto my computer and kept
them nice and organized but never *looked* at them again - seeing
pics I never knew i had!
[ nanarose ] That would probably work. I do want to keep some of
them. Good ideas .
[ vanessa23 ] How is everyone tackling the pictures - are you starting
from the present and going back. It sounds like every is way back
and I've barely tackled 2009!
[ stacy julian ] Heather -- 3000 wedding photos? WOW. You go girl.
purge. sort. repeat.
[ Tilly-Loo ] Heather Peet -- ME, TOO! I've got some awesome pics
hidden on my computer! Reminds me of that older commercial where
the images are begging to come out of the computer...
[ Heather Peet ] um...yeah: 3,000
[ embracelife ] Stacy, we had some rough events this year. Going
through and scrapping them totally changed my view of the year.
I was able to see all the fun stuff that happened and develop an
attitude of contentment and gratitude. Pictures matter :)
[ gluemore girl ] "Stacy, I've told people on one of my MB's
about this and they don't really get it... they are still overwhelmed
with getting the events down and caught up.<br />
The way I found myself on this journey was when I went back to scrap
pics from 1998 ten yrs later and the stories I scrapped were very
different."
[ SusiB ] I'm starting from the present & going back on
my pictures.
[ KimberlyAnn ] Vanessa23 - I'm starting from present and going
backwards.
[ stacy julian ] Simpkiss --- please do. I have almost ZERO photos
of my mom during my growing up years.
[ vanessa23 ] This is one time when I feel like my procrastination
with printing has helped me. I only have digital photos to sort
through for the past 5 years.
[ Tilly-Loo ] vanessa -- i'm working from the present back with
my digital photos.... and it's catch as catch can with printed ones.
If I find a box of photos, I sort it into my system... so I just
all around... I don't feel I need to sort in a chronological order,
LOL.
[ SusiB ] I'm not sure my parents even owned a camera when I was
young :(
[ Simpkiss ] I'm starting with vages this week
[ nonnysbooks ] When we moved 3 years ago, we had 6 months to purge
the house and pack, so as we packed and I found photos, they all
got packed together in bins, no sorting, just its a picture it goes
in this box...I still have 3 boxes to go through, and have 15 photo
albums in chronological order (but not purged) I haven't touched
those yet in this class
[ Meggie ] "Today I hope to learn to do the digital.<br
/>
Yes, I find I'm not in many on my husbands side. On my side everyone
is snapping pictures and we trade thankgoodness.<br />
Embracelife that's really encouraging because we've had some trouble
this last summer."
[ nanarose ] Starting from present. My daughter is going to have
to help me date some of the ones from the 1980's. She remembers
her hair styles by years. Don't know how she does it. My memory
isn't that good-lol.
[ stacy julian ] embracelife -- isn't that the truth! It is so easy
to get caught up in the challenge of life and miss the little daily
blessings and the happiness that is available to us. What wisdom!
[ embracelife ] Stacy, when you say your system has changed and
grown, I have all my handouts from last year. Do i need to print
off the new ones, or are they similar enough to just read through?
Thanks
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] It is amazing! And even more amazing - I
love how this is an ongoing process. There is so much more I am
going to learn - treasures I am going to find...
[ Buglet ] Stacy- where will we find the transcripts of the chats
when they are posted?
[ Sabine H ] I also pretty much scrap the present day stuff and
work backwards... doesn't always work though - sometimes, I just
do what inspires me! Thats way more fun.
[ lwestphal ] Q: Need suggestions on how to tackle this: One of
my boys passed away a few years ago. I'm not ready to scrap about
him, but am having trouble sorting through photos with him in it.
Do I just through all of the ones with him in a folder and call
it good for now? -Or try to force myself to get rid of 'ok' and
'bad' photos he's in???
[ Barb in AK ] Before you print your digi-photos, do you crop, enhance,
whittle away the weight, etc, then print? I think I'm balking at
printing my photos because the perfectionist in me wants to "get
them right". :-S
[ karenowc ] this is my second year and I have all my printed photos
in order and I'm fairly happy with my digital. I'm looking forward
to tagging my digitals.
[ embracelife ] "(((lwestphai))))<br />
God bless you, what a difficult process"
[ Annette33 ] lwest-I have the same problem with the last year my
mom was alive, the same year little dd was born
[ SusiB ] COngrast.Karenowc
[ stacy julian ] nonnysbooks -- it is perfectly OK to ignore certain
collections of photos the first time through LOM. I'd rather you
learn the big lessons with just some of your photos and then go
back and introduce others. Photos that are already protected in
albums can wait!
[ vanessa23 ] I know I should get interested in capturing pictures
from my childhood and life before marriage and kids, but I can't
motivate myself - it's already seeming like a huge undertaking without
those 25 years included.
[ Annette33 ] since I am trying to get away from chronological scrapping,
how does one put the pages in an album?
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] (((lwestphai)))
[ stacy julian ] embracelife -- I think I would reprint this year.
There are some pretty significant changes. Especially in the first
several lessons. Big pain I know. I'm reprinting and I haven't for
two years!
[ gluemore girl ] tough one lwestphai, you do what you can handle...
that's all and no more. ((hugs))
[ karenowc ] I did fill 5 binders with current photos but that's
where I left off last year. We've since gained a new grandchild
(our 1st) so I'm incorporating her into the books now and I have
a TON more photos to tackle.
[ angie w ] lwestphal--I am an alum and also had a similar problem.
One year was completely awful and I couldn't look at those pics
at all. I just put them all in a photobox and its sitting with my
other pics. I know they are there. I know they are safe. And after
a year of working with this system, I've even manged to get some
of them out again. Do what you need to. Hugs!
[ AmySJ ] Annette's question made me think. . . Will you give us
a brief overview of the whole process/ system?
[ SusiB ] Catagory drawers...what is everyone using...I can't find
the metal ones.
[ Tilly-Loo ] lwestphai -- big hugs to you. those photos will be
ready for you when you are ready. I would just put them somewhere
safe... maybe ask a friend to slip them into storage binders so
the photos are protected and then move on to work with pictures
that you can handle right now. MY heart goes out to you.
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] I've been scrapping for over a decade. How far
back do you suggest going to get a good feel for my current approach?
[ nonnysbooks ] "I had pretty much decided I would just work
on the digi-pics for right now...because of the volume...and am
nearing the end of purging through 5 years of digi<br />
<br />
I do still have CDs with the original digis, and I started with
a clean external hard drive to collect the pics that are scrappable
or potentials to work this system with....especially since I'm still
basically new to scrapbooking"
[ gluemore girl ] Susi, I got the metal drawers from Staples.com...
I spraypainted them white to go in my scrap space.
[ stacy julian ] "lwestphal,<br />
I would not toss any photos of a child you've lost. I might encourage
you to do a quick sort for a dozen of your MOST favorite photos
of him, but let your heart tell you when the time is right. There's
no rush here. I am so sorry for your loss -- I can't even imagine.
I do know that when you are ready, scrapbooking will heal you and
other members of your family! Hang in there."
[ Heather Peet ] i'm using CM power sorts for my category "drawers"
just b/c I have two of them and that'd be a great use for them
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] SusiB: I am using one of those white 4 drawer
storage cubes from Michaels as my category drawers - the modular
ones that you can stack that are meant for craft storage.
[ vanessa23 ] I haven't invested in any category drawers yet - afraid
to commit until I know more :)
[ SusiB ] I removed all my digital pictures (except the ones that
were edited) I plan to add them back a little at a time.
[ LizL ] @SusiB - re category drawers, right now im using CM lg
powersort box - until it becomes too small at least:-)
[ AprilFL ] vanessa, that's completely okay to wait.
[ SusiB ] Thanks...scrapbookenthusiast!
[ angeljade ] SusiB - I'm also using the white modular 4 drawer
storage from Michael's.
[ Gloriak ] It took me 2 years to talk myself into this class and
I was so excited to take the plunge and now I just feel overwhelmed.
I am comfortable with my computer and digital stuff yet and feel
like maybe I bit off more than I can chew.
[ stacy julian ] I can't see Annette's question, but there is an
overview of the system coming. Don't forget this is only week ONE!
There is lots of good stuff coming -- I'm eager too, but if I give
you too much too soon, you'll all run away!
[ SusiB ] Thanks Heather Peet
[ Sabine H ] I'm also using the CM powersort for my category drawers...
they'll hold up to 2400 photos so that should do the trick. Would
love to get the metal drawers, but I don't have room so I think
this will work.
[ karenowc ] lwestphal - I'm so sorry about your child.
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] No problem. :) I think it works really well.
My drawers are nowhere near full yet so I have had to prop photos
up inside with paperbacks... LOL
[ SusiB ] Thanks Lizl
[ stacy julian ] "vanessa,<br />
Lots of information on category drawers coming in lesson 2 and 3
-- don't feel the need to purchase yet!"
[ Tilly-Loo ] LOL, Stacy, we won't run away! We TRUST you.
[ AmySJ ] Gloria- I know the feeling in some ways- I think it's
my nature to "react" to change this way. So, I'm
working to just be open.
[ Annette33 ] Julian--I just said that if we are moving away from
chronological, how do you arrange them in a scrapbook?
[ Gloriak ] That should be NOT comfortable (see this is my 1st chat
and I'm already messing up) what if I screw up all my photos and
have nothing left to scrap!
[ angie w ] I don't have the metal drawers either, they are too
long for my shelves. I am just using four white photo safe boxes
for now. They've worked for the past year.
[ vanessa23 ] I figured it wasn't much of a hurry for me since I
have no actual prints any way. It's sad that I have exactly one
print copy of my 7 month old!
[ Tilly-Loo ] Gloriak -- congratulations on taking the plunge! There
are so many people here to help you that I know you will not feel
overwhelmed for long.
[ SusiB ] I'm not running...I love your system...
[ Simpkiss ] I took this class last year and was very over whelmed
this still over whelmed but making better progress
[ Heather Peet ] check out The Container Store - don't know if you
ladies have this where you are, but it's NIRVANA - you can shop
online
[ stacy julian ] Gloriak -- do you have physical prints from years
prior to digital? Start with those and just learn the system. It
is overwhelming, so your feelings are normal and expected. Once
you get an idea of where we are going and you learn the basic processes
you can integrate the digital pictures -- deal?
[ Meggie ] lwestphal-so sorry to read about your child.
[ SusiB ] ((lwestphal))
[ stacy julian ] vanessa23 -- that's what we're going to change
first -- we'll get you printing some pictures and then move forward!
[ embracelife ] Ladies, can I encourage you? Last year when I did
this I allowed my mind to get overwhelmed by the possibilities of
change presented here. It was a big step, and worth every second.
However, in a do over I would totally stress less. The answers will
unfold over time. Stacy does a great job of giving you tidbits when
they are most helpful.
[ nanarose ] lwestphal-so sorry about your child. Just do what you
are comfortable with and give it time. God bless
[ Gloriak ] I have both books and have read and implemented several
things already its really just the computer stuff that scares me.
I have binders of chronological photos from the last years and I
have drawers (they are empty!) I need to become more at home with
Picasa I think.
[ angie w ] Gloriak- it is overwhelming but Stacy lets you come
back two more times for free. You have another two years after this
to take the class so you are not overwhelmed.
[ AprilFL ] gloria, hang in there. Your photos will be found in
this system. It's okay.
[ Heather Peet ] i'm going with the flow and trying not to stress,
but i can't IMAGINE breaking away from chrono scrapping...i start
twitching :)
[ Sabine H ] I feel a little overwhelmed too... like oh my goodness
what have I got myself into, but ever since I purchased Photo Freedom
and then Big Picture Scrapbook - I've been reading and re-reading
and have been obsesses with implementing this system... so I KNOW
it will be worth it... Just gonna trust Stacy!!
[ vanessa23 ] Stacey - how do you suggest I approach printing. Obviously
I'm not going to be able to afford to print 5000 prints up front.
Should I just print the stuff from the highlights folder. Anything
that I don't scrapbook, I'm probably just going to put in a yearly
photo book so do I need to print those?
[ KimberlyAnn ] I've only been sorting my digital photos, because
I know some of my prints are copies. Do we sort both the digital
copies and the printed copies? Or set the printed ones aside from
the others we're sorting?
[ nanarose ] I am noticing that I do mostly us when I scrap. Never
realized that.
[ annt ] lwestphal-my heart goes out to you...I agree with Stacy
not to toss any photos...sometimes my favorites are the lesser quality
ones, but they capture a mood or feeling. Hugs.
[ Simpkiss ] That is so true she dose guide very well what is over
whelming is the amount of undated photos that have to be sorted
my younges is 22 years old a lot of photos
[ gluemore girl ] Heather.... it is so great and liberating to not
worry about chrono scrapping! I went to a weekend crop last week
and belted out 11 pages of whatever I felt like scrapping!!
[ embracelife ] Heather Peet, i felt the same way and now i feel
FREE, just to create for the enjoyment of it
[ kellyd ] My husband's first wife died at the age of 28. We have
all of their wedding photos and vacation photos from throughout
their relationship. I do I deal with these photos.
[ stacy julian ] I keep losing a question about moving away from
chronological -- don't worry, the answers will come. We aren't doing
any rearranging just yet. Chronological albums are very comfortable
and predictable -- before I ask you to move pages or rearrange,
I will show you what you'll gain by doing so. And, there is still
an element of chronology that you'll enjoy. Be patient and trust
me (OK?!)
[ Becky C ] I was wondering if at some time we will make a print
of all our digi pictures?
[ SusiB ] I've got about a years worth of photos to print...I'm
editing...watching for sales and ordering...I just got 40% off a
bunch at Walgreen's.
[ sleepyhead ] We trust you Stacy and it doesn't look like anyone
is running away! :-)
[ Annette33 ] LOL, I don't plan on touching anything I already scrapped.
I just wondered how it should be arranged once I start the new way.
[ angie w ] kellyd-if you want to scrap them do it, if you don't,
put them in a safe photo album and call it good. What does your
husband want to do with them?
[ daisy10727 ] I have most of my printed pictures (up until the
end of 2008) stored by year, I really don't want to rearrange those
but I have started sorting the ones that aren't already by year
into this system
[ lwestphal ] Thanks everyone :) I know this class is going to help
me 'get it together' again. Thanks for the suggestions. . .I think
just hearing others say it's o.k. not to force anything makes me
feel better. And yes, Stacy, I will take out maybe 12 or so. . .that
is definitely do-able. :)
[ vanessa23 ] How much does everyone scrapbook now? I have serious
commitment issues with sticking my pictures to paper so I have years
worth of layouts planned, precious few done.
[ stacy julian ] "kellyd,<br />
I would ask your husband to deal with these photos. Tell him you'd
really like to introduce a portion of them into your emerging system
because they are an important part of his story. Ask him to select
his MOST favorite photos! I'm sure this could be difficult for you,
but it is the right thing to do and it will enrich your current
story/life in wonderful ways!"
[ Scrapbook_Girl ] Getting here a little late, so excited to be
here, thanks again Stacy!
[ daisy10727 ] I have a few layouts planned, I just need to get
copies of the pictures from my mom
[ Gloriak ] Will there be a place to find answers about specific
digital photo systems? I am using picasa but am very new to it and
really don't even know how to navigate it. I have only 1 photos
in a highlights folder from years ago!
[ SusiB ] Stacy....how long will we have access to this class?
[ Heather Peet ] i know, stacy - i WILL embrace the non-chrono....as
soon as i start twitching
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] I actually purchased Photo Freedom and started
implementing it last year. I am so glad I finally could take this
class so I could totally utilize this system. My digital photos
were taken, stored and forgotten. Through the preclass assignments
alone, my hard drive already thanks you Stacy! :)
[ sleepyhead ] I scrapbook by Stacy's terms in PF everyday - actual
layouts probably 2+ x /week - I do digi so I can always rearrange
[ Tilly-Loo ] vanessa, here's the way I look at.... it's better
to commit to paper imperfectly than to never commit it to paper
at all... of course with prints that come from digi photos you can
always reprint
[ gluemore girl ] Vanessa, I used to try to scrap every photo but
I think this system will help us to see that these other "left
out" photos may get to paper another way... hang in there
[ AmySJ ] I don't get to scrapbook nearly as much as I used to.
I didn't scrapbook pretty much 2 years. In 2010, Took DYL and have
been doing 3/wk. Not sure I'll be able to keep that up.
[ Scrapbook_Girl ] Gloriak - check under the forums, there is a
digital forum with lots of good info
[ JenC ] Annette, I'm with you. I'm not going back and redoing my
old albums, but I do have layouts that need a home and I am moving
forward from here!
[ Gloriak ] We don't have to do layout yet do we!? I really just
want to get my photos organized.
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] I moved last October and haven't scrapped
since before the move! Shameful... I know...
[ AprilFL ] In the albums at the top, there's also a DIGITAL album
where Kayla's informational videos are located.
[ embracelife ] scrapbook enthusiast, i moved the October before
and it took me months to feel ready
[ nanarose ] We do have one layout for lesson 1. It will be fun.
[ vanessa23 ] I have you beat scrapbookenthusiast - the only time
I have touched my supplies in the past year is to help my 2 year
old with a letter to Santa :) Aside from shopping of course!
[ Gloriak ] I spend what amounts to quite a bit of time in my scrap
room but haven't touched an actual photo or layout in over a year.
Made lots of cards and gifts!
[ Scrapbook_Girl ] I came late but saw questions about printing
digital - has this been addressed yet?
[ AmySJ ] What exactly is the layout we are doing this week- which
ever is least in our research. . .do a page that included that.
[ kellyd ] Thanks Stacy and Angie W-great ideas!
[ Caroline E ] My plan is to keep the chronological albums that
I have, and move forward with the LOM system. I still have some
unscrapped photos from those years, which I plan to incorporate
in the new system. But it would be too overwhelming for me to have
to redo already completed albums - I'd rather just look forward
to going forward in a different way.
[ nanarose ] I scrap a little every day. Really enjoy it.
[ Buglet ] Curretly, I scrap at a weekend retreat twice a year.
I am too overwhelmed to get items out at home but hope to change
that!
[ stacy julian ] For those of you that have printed photos sorted
by year -- you do not have to rearrange them. Simply move them into
storage binders so you can see them! As you move them over -- purge
(get rid of) any photos you really don't want to scrapbook. These
will go into cold storage boxes. If you already have pictures stored
by year in photo albums where you can see them, you might just look
through them and either pull photos you don't want to scrapbook
or flag them! We'll learn how to deal with them later. Having 3-ring
photo albums is so very important. I would strongly encourage you
to get your printed pictures into photo albums that allow you to
remove pages!
[ Heather Peet ] i don't know how you ppl with kids do it!! you
must take SO MANY photos and have so much LESS time - i already
don't have time and it's just me, my hubbie and our dog :)
[ Annette33 ] we have a crop in my classroom once a month. Has made
it so much easier for me to scrap, since it is my classroom, lol
[ annt ] The chronological approach killed my scrapbooking because
I couldn't keep up. When I read The Big Picture, I skipped ahead
to where I was currently, and had a blast! Now, when I have time,
I scrap whatever I am inspired to scrap...it's the only way I can
do this hobby and stay inspired.
[ stacy julian ] "CarolineE -- I support this decision. I don't
support do-overs.<br />
There is too many wonderful things yet to do to fret about the past."
[ sleepyhead ] I switched to digi so I could scrap whatever inspired
me and not worry about where to put it
[ AprilFL ] yes, Amy - whatever flag you had the least of, with
whatever W was missing the most.
[ stacy julian ] Buglet -- we'll help you!
[ Lea S ] Hey everyone. :-) I've started to organise my photos into
years then seasons but I'm stuck! What do I do with the photos I
have 'inherited' that cover the time form my parents meeting, getting
married to me and my sister being born? I have no idea what season,
let alone year, some of these are from, especially the ones of me!!
[ Gloriak ] When I realized that I wasn't scrapping photos as much
I stopped taking as many and that makes me sad. I have 2 DS and
I feel like I am missing out on alot.
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] Thanks guys. I can't even explain why I
hadn't been scrapbooking but I hope to gain my mojo back and really
enjoy this again... :)
[ nonnysbooks ] Since I haven't been scrapping for long, I haven't
yet developed "habits"...my projects so far were
my Dad's "11th Birthday" album (a tribute album)
and a start on an album for my grandson...and have a ton of ideas
percolating
[ AmySJ ] Have those of you without kids felt the pressure to scrapbook
Chronologically? (I've never felt that and am curious is it was
me or perhaps related to the fact we don't have kids)
[ stacy julian ] Heather Peet -- LOTS of photos, little time. This
is why we have an LOM in the first place. Gotta love those overwhelming
children!
[ Scrapbook_Girl ] I have been scrapbooking since 1997, so changing
my thinking is not easy!
[ stacy julian ] scrapbookenthusiast -- you'll get your mojo back
and more. promise!
[ angie w ] Gloriak-I did the same thing. Stopped taking photos
because I couldn't keep up scrapbooking. But Stacy's system helps,
I promise, and I've been taking more pics and more thoughtful pics
then ever.
[ sleepyhead ] I made sure to show my kids how to use my camera
so I can get some more of me in the picture :-)
[ Heather Peet ] AmySJ - I don't have kids and I feel I MUST scrap
chronologically. I'm confident Stacy will shake me into submission.
[ Buglet ] Just putting the photos in binders has been inspiring.
My kids love seeing pictures of themselves (even if they aren't
scrapped).
[ stacy julian ] "Scrapbook_girl<br />
Never said it would be easy.<br />
It will totally be worth it.<br />
So glad you're here -- thank YOU!"
[ Gloriak ] sleepyhead Great idea!
[ daisy10727 ] Amy-I never felt I had to scrap chronologically,
it just usually hapens that way
[ Tilly-Loo ] Remember, just because you take a photo of it, doesn't
mean you have to scrap it. Please don't stop taking pics of your
kids because you don't want to scrap them! (I'm a third child, and
my mom didn't take many pics of me, LOL!)
[ twinsmk5 ] good idea sleepyhead
[ nanarose ] Two years ago, started putting me in pics. Wanted my
grandkids to be able to look back and actually see me.
[ karenowc ] I've been doing a lot of craft projects and cards.
The only scrapping I've done is in Cathy's classes. I've been doing
them digitally and love it.
[ annt ] The other thing that allows me to scrap is having a space
set up. If you have to drag it all out and put it all away, you
won't.
[ SusiB ] I've started to get in the picture a little more too.
And I have to force my DH most of the time!
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] Thanks SO much Stacy - I am letting myself
totally get into this. I am putty in your capable hands! :)
[ Caroline E ] One of the things I love most about Stacy's system
is her emphasis that there is no wrong way to do it. I feel like
I can put my perfectionist tendencies aside, and do what feels right
and works for me. That is so freeing!!
[ stacy julian ] Buglet -- one of the reasons I love storage binders.
Our families and children just want to see their pictures -- so
true!
[ sleepyhead ] great point Tilly - Loo - taking lots of photos should
give us options not pressure
[ Tilly-Loo ] Nanarose -- thank you for doing that! I wish I had
more pics of my mother and my grandmother. I want to SEE them!
[ Annette33 ] way open to change, when it comes to scrapbooking
[ Buglet ] That alone, has made a difference. Plus, I can't scrap
what I can't see!
[ Candace Ann ] will someone tell me what DH is??
[ Heather Peet ] darling husband
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] DH = dear husband :)
[ Tilly-Loo ] DH = dear husband
[ nonnysbooks ] DH = Dear Husband
[ sleepyhead ] d stands for darling - h is hubby, might also see
DD darling daughter, ds darling son, etc
[ HeidiM ] I was working on my highlights folders last night and
I have to say it not only made me miss some of the past but it made
me so excited that my daughter would finally see pics of when she
was little! And man! Deleting never felt so good!
[ AmySJ ] Oh, speaking of old photos, yall might find this cool.
They were part of the discussion at the Turkey Federation last night.
We'd just gone through some old photos of my DH with his Uncle many
shooting a recurve bow. There was a popular hunter from TN invited
and she learned archery from his Uncle. We talked about that pic
we'd just gone through.
[ Candace Ann ] OOOhhhhhh.. Thanks!!
[ SusiB ] Yep...Dear Husband
[ mumto3cutekids ] darling?? Oh my, I thought it was "damn"....LOL!!
So happy to be here!
[ angeljade ] I have found that the implementation of the storage
binders have already increased my scrapbooking output dramatically!
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] Stacy - How far back do you suggest going with
flagging our completed albums?
[ vanessa23 ] How is everyone doing with the first assignment? Reading
the message board it seems like everyone has more hours in the day
than me :) I just got around to filling out the first sheet and
listening to the audio last night.
[ stacy julian ] Great advice Tilly-loo -- TAKE LOTS of pictures.
I'll give you permission to not scrap MOST Of them. The BEST will
be honored with your perspective and you'll have a priceless library
of memories. I'm giddy just saying that!
[ nonnysbooks ] DS - Darling son; DD - darling daughter; DGS - Darling
grandson, etc.
[ karenowc ] Stacey - it is so true. I have over 20 scrapbooks (since
1994). No one looks at them - then last year I filled 5 binders
and put them on an open shelf and my daughter goes through them.
That was one of my aha moments in this class.
[ Tilly-Loo ] Heidi = "deleting never felt so good"
I AGREE!
[ twinsmk5 ] thats a good ond momto3kids
[ Annette33 ] lol, that is used when he's made you mad
[ AprilFL ] yay Heidi! It does feel good!
[ Tilly-Loo ] mumto3 .... LOL!
[ gluemore girl ] gotta run... thanks Stacy and April for hosting
this chat!
[ sleepyhead ] momto3, yep definite dual meaning depending on the
day
[ Helen Anne ] when counting layouts for the first lesson should
we count just scrapbooks or photobooks too (mostly a photo diary
of trips)
[ SusiB ] Gluestick...good luck with the Saints!
[ Heather Peet ] I LOVE deleting and when i get rid of prints, i
rip them first - it feels awesome
[ stacy julian ] When you're flagging completed pages. I would try
and do a handful from each year you've been scrapbooking if you
can --- this will really show you how you've evolved over time and
help you know which layouts you really value NOW, so that you can
move forward with lots of clarity on what you most want to accomplish!
[ sleepyhead ] go heather peet!
[ Steph in No Cal ] Vanessa23--I'm right there with you. Don't stress.
We'll get there.
[ SusiB ] My DIL is coming by to help me out later...can't wait!
[ stacy julian ] Heather -- you crack me up. Rrrrrip!
[ embracelife ] Stacy, last year I pulled about 100 photos and sorted
them into buckets of Us, People, Places, Things. Was that from this
class? They are still there...
[ Barb in AK ] AmySJ- I have always scrapped chrono...And have a
child--It's just the part of me that HAS to be organized and chrono
has always been that outlet for me. I hope LOM will help me get
a little more "laid back" ;-)
[ nanarose ] Ripping is very therapeutic
[ AprilFL ] what a great project for you and your DIL to do together!
[ annt ] Yeah...like junk mail!
[ Gloriak ] The highlights folders freak me out alittle. I put photos
in there from years ago that I know I already scrapped somewhere,
but I love the photos. So will I end up with yet another copy of
a photo I don't know where to store or will feel pressured to scrap?
[ Lea S ] Hey everyone! Have started to sort my photos into years
and seasons but I'm stuck! I have all our family photos form my
mum and dad meeting, getting married and having me and my sister,
none are in order - where do I start? I don't know what year, let
alone season, these photos are from??
[ SusiB ] I've ripped up a few myself!
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] Thanks, Stacy. That really helps!
[ stacy julian ] Helen Anne -- I mostly want you to notice trends,
so I think I'd have you focus on pages that tell individual stories.
[ vanessa23 ] Just curious - what do you all do with your hubby's
pictures. I don't really want to start valuing pictures of him with
his ex but they are a part of life!
[ nonnysbooks ] I'm thinking my Least Common LO...is gonna be something
DH and I talked about 2 weeks ago...a page for the items currently
sitting in our china cabinet, with journaling about why each of
those items is important...they all have stories behind them, and
the kids wouldn't remember those stories....Least common because
I just have so few pages done as it is
[ HeidiM ] good ques-vanessa23. we don't have many but there are
some!!!!
[ nanarose ] Lea S-I would start just by sorting them into general
time periods, and not stress too much about them right now.
[ AprilFL ] Lea, it's okay to just put these in a "decade"
pile. Don't worry about getting hung up on older dates that you
don't remember.
[ angeljade ] Lea S - I started with my grandmother's photos by
sorting by decade, then worked down from there.
[ sleepyhead ] nonnysbook - great idea!
[ Heather Peet ] my husbands' pre-me days are in an album - i made
him roughly chrono them - there is room for writing, but i know
he'll never do it :)
[ Annette33 ] My least common LO is going to be about me! I have
none
[ stacy julian ] Gloria -- don't worry. For now, just create highlights
folders. The system will take care of the rest. Your job is to put
your BEST photos (scrapped or unscrapped) into seasonal/quarterly
folders. We'll get to the printing and using in coming lessons!
[ Gloriak ] It feels good to delete photos I know I will never use
(blurry, dark etc) but I feel like I already have pics in more places
that I'm aware of. Are we supposed to print all of the photos in
the highlights folder?
[ stacy julian ] Oh I LOVE the idea of telling stories about items
in a china cabinet -- can't wait to see that!
[ Tilly-Loo ] nonnysbooks -- I LOVE that idea. Before she left this
world, my grandma went around her apartment and wrote little notes
and stuck them to everything meaningful. I can't tell you how much
that meant to my mom (her daughter) and me... and now I can tell
the story of these precious "things" to my kids,
too
[ AmySJ ] Vanessa- I don't have the Ex thing and DH and I met in
college- so our lives are all quite interwhined. I'm thinking I
won't be looking at his childhood pics for this class but can't
wait. I want to capture all the stories he's told me. . . of how
his dad would ice their tree on the rare night they'd get to freezing,
or the snake in the canoe floating with his uncle
[ Gloriak ] Ok, so really just stop second guessing everything and
do the homework!!
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] Lea S - I have broader categories for those
photos, like "My childhood", "My Husband's
childhood". Or you could even do decades instead of years
[ AprilFL ] nonny, seriously fabulous idea! I can't wait to see
it either!
[ HeidiM ] Tilly-loo-that's awesome!
[ SusiB ] I have tons of pictures yet I keep asking family members
for more... I barely have any from my childhood!
[ stacy julian ] Gloria -- girlfriend, you have got to stop worrying
about things yet to come. Take a deep breath and put your BEST photos
into highlights folders. trust me.
[ kellyd ] What do I do with the digital photos on my computer that
I have already scrapped. Do I move them to Highlight folders or
just keep them in my library?
[ sleepyhead ] ditto kellyd
[ Lea S ] Thanks everyone, I can just about manage decades! But
that still leaves a few hundreds in each category, is taht OK? I
had no idea we had this many until I started to gather them all
together!!
[ nonnysbooks ] "idea came from a Clean House episode, they
didn't want to get rid of anything, so the host made them turn their
back and name what was in the cabinet...he couldn't do it, but DH
and I were able to quickly name everything in the china cabinet
and why they were important<br />
<br />
DH said, that should go in a scrapbook for the future, the kids
should know WHY we kept those things."
[ Tilly-Loo ] Gloriak -- you got it!
[ stacy julian ] AmySJ -- great idea to save DH childhood photos
for later, you'll love LOM though because it will totally help you
tell these fun stories!
[ AprilFL ] remember also that if you're overwhelmed with the amount
of photos, you should try and only implement with FIVE YEARS first;
then integrate the rest later. Don't let that hold you back.
[ Buglet ] Stacy- what is a fair estimate of the number of photos
that you scrap versus the number that you take? I am assuming that
you take a few hundred a month and scrap maybe 100 or so?
[ AprilFL ] that's not to say, don't sort them in some order, but
only move five years into storage binders first.
[ AmySJ ] LOL I'm probably waiting on his kids pics 'cuse his dad
was like me- loved to take pics- only mine didn't start flourishing
until I went digi.
[ Lea S ] Scrapbbokgirl71 - I really like that idea! Categoreis
like, mum and dad before kids, my childhood, when my sisister arrived...
brilliant!
[ Scrapbook_Girl ] I'm still working on last year, but I've deleted
a ton - from 12,000 to 8,000. I take a LOT . . .
[ Tilly-Loo ] This chat is making me SO EXCITED! Anyone wanna come
babysit so I can go sort photos???
[ Heather Peet ] be jealous of me: i'm snowed in, in my pj's, wrapped
in a down comforter w/ my laptop and DH just brought me breakfast
and a mimosa! :)
[ Sabine H ] nonnysbooks... love that idea. I've had that one on
my 'album idea' list for a few years now... every once in awhile
I take a photo of something precious and make notes on where it
came from..one day it'll go in a little album... so far its working
title is 'pieces of 8' (think pirates and treasure...haha)
[ sleepyhead ] sweet - definitely 'darling' hubby today heather
peet
[ SusiB ] Heather Peet...Lucky Girl!
[ Tilly-Loo ] Heather Peet -- Does your DH make house calls?
[ nonnysbooks ] Cute title Sabine
[ mumto3cutekids ] Heather Peet...now THAT is a DEAR husband for
sure!
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] How wonderful Heather! Enjoy that - that
is awesome! :)
[ stacy julian ] kellyd - If you LOVE a photo (scrapped or unscrapped)
move it to a highlights folder. For example, if you come across
a group of birthday party photos that you know you've already scrapped
and there are three that you absolutely adore, put those three in
your highlights folder. You may have already scrapped 15 pictures
from the birthday -- you don't have to put them all in, just the
ones that melt your heart --- make sense?
[ daisy10727 ] Heather- very jealous...I'm snowed in with 3 boys,
ages 9,3,& 18 mo &DH is working today
[ vanessa23 ] Anyone else feeling the organizing bug taking over
their life? I am so tempted to head to Costco to get a label maker
and organize everything!
[ embracelife ] Speaking of deleting photos, i got Photoshop for
Christmas and have no idea how to use it. I need to figure out out
how to delete and see lots at once, any ideas anyone?
[ Lea S ] :-) I so want a label maker!!!
[ sleepyhead ] right there with you vanessa.. and I already have
a label maker!
[ stacy julian ] vanessa -- organization is contagious! focus on
your photos first!!
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] Heather - Totally jealous! Have a great day!
[ SusiB ] I'm told I have OCD...so this class should fit right in!
[ AprilFL ] embracelife - CS4 or PSE ?
[ angeljade ] vanessa23 - I did just that last week - got a label
maker and started organizing everything, everywhere!
[ sleepyhead ] embracelife check out the digital forum, kayla has
great videos there to get you started
[ Tilly-Loo ] vanessa -- this happened to me last year during LOM.
I made "highlight drawers" of my clothes and got
rid of the rest of my clothing because I didn't absolutely love
it -- gave it to women's shelter.
[ annt ] My 22 month old unorganizes everything I organize. ;0
[ kellyd ] Totally makes sense Stacy. Thank you!!!
[ embracelife ] thanks sleepyhead
[ stacy julian ] embracelife -- talk to Kayla, our digital trainer.
If you click on the 'digital' album at the top of the screen, you'll
see LOTS of video tutorials she has created for us!
[ sleepyhead ] tillyLoo good for you
[ twinsmk5 ] embracelife i am with you i just got photo elemnets
for my birthday and just learning to use it so i feel a bit lost
[ embracelife ] PSE 8
[ daisy10727 ] me too...totally need a label maker
[ embracelife ] Awesome Kayla, thanks!
[ AmySJ ] Scrapbook Girl, I used to be that way until I went to
Camera Raw and knew I had to purge. Went through all digi and have
nearly 17,000 pics, 3000 of which need to be edited/purged yet (two
aquarium trips and one zoo really didn't help that) and 500 or so
scanned of print
[ AprilFL ] Yep, perfect - Kayla has videos for that . . . and the
digi forums are great too!
[ vanessa23 ] Tilly-Loo - too funny. I wish I could do that but
with a 7 month old baby, none of my clothes love me right now.
[ twinsmk5 ] the digital forums are great though i will be refreshing
on those a bit i did do some hl folders though
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] I have had CS3 Bridge for a while but am
more comfortable using Picassa for photo organizing - go figure!
[ rick rack girl ] Does anyone have iphoto? My computer that has
it on is from 2005. Should I invest in the new i-photo before I
load all my photos on and organize them. I currently have the money
to buy it.
[ stacy julian ] Tilly-loo -- so funny. clothing highlights!
[ HeidiM ] I 2nd the tutorial. I print out the transcripts and then
watch the tutorial and take notes as needed. Very well done!
[ sleepyhead ] good for you twinsmk5 - progress is good!
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] Wow Tilly-Loo, that's REALLY embracing the LOM
system!
[ lwestphal ] embracelife - we're in the same boat. . .I just loaded
Photoshop on my laptop yesterday. . .feeling a little frustrated.
. .thinking about buying 'Photoshop For Dummies'! : ) he-he.
[ karenowc ] Label maker = best thing I've purchased. EVERYthing
gets labeled when it comes in the house = all electrocincs anyway.
All the cords etc. Has saved me so much time.
[ SusiB ] Seems like everything in my house is organized except
my pictures...at the moment!
[ sleepyhead ] for any pse users, the digitalscrapbookteacher.com
has a great book that is designed specifically for scrapbookers
[ stacy julian ] rick rack girl -- OH my goodness, YES. Buy the
latest iPhoto. It rocks! It has all kinds of cool features that
will make your sorting and purging so easy. Watch Kayla's tutorials
too!
[ Tilly-Loo ] SusiB -- that's awesome! You won't get sidetracked
during LOM.
[ HeidiM ] so how do you handle pics that you know need edited?
Do you move to your highlights and edit before printing? Or what
about pics that you think you can edit? Edit then move?
[ Scrapbook_Girl ] wait, so should our highlights folders be everything
we think we might want to scrap, or just the best? I thought one
star for like, two for really like, and three stars for the best
of the best
[ Lea S ] My university runs free courses for post grads on how
to use Photoshop - so lucky!
[ sleepyhead ] lucky you lea s
[ embracelife ] they only have photoshop dummies for 7 :) I am still
hoping for 8
[ rick rack girl ] Thank you Stacy. I needed someone to tell me
it was worth the money. I am going to the Apple store today.
[ vanessa23 ] Must not read about Mac - so want one and this is
delaying my photo sorting as I debate if we should swing it!
[ karenowc ] For PSE users, there is a great book (with CD) called
Classroom in a box. They take you through all the exercises you
need. Very helpful.
[ Simpkiss ] Just what is the best way to set up these highlite
folders I have mine bye year and months inside is this okay
[ Lea S ] I know, really gave me a heads up. :-)
[ AmySJ ] For Photoshop and Bridge training, check out kelbytraining.com
They also have lots of Lightroom and some PSE. Excellant source
and affordable by the month. Promise it won't disappoint. . . unless
you're looking for scrapbook specific. You'll learn lots of principles
and all kinds of photographical tricks. (And they have classes on
photography)- and it's unlimited access to the all classes
[ MichelleC ] embrace life - there is a good book for Photoshop
called The Missing Manual.
[ annt ] Yes, I get hung up on the editing question too...when to
edit/print...?
[ AmySJ ] Scrapbook training wise, I've taken some classes from
Jessica Sprague and I think that would be cool.
[ stacy julian ] HeidiM -- move to highlights folder first, then
worry about editing. By creating highlights folders we are creating
new 'go-to' collections of photos. Once you've pared everything
down to your BEST and most favorite, you'll really be able to see
how much editing you want to do, and you'll even be able to track
your editing process easier.Make sense?
[ SusiB ] Getting lost in all this digital stuff...must watch videos
later today!
[ embracelife ] thanks Karen, I will find it Thanks Amy and Michelle
[ stacy julian ] Highlights folders first, then editing and printing.
[ Gloriak ] Wait, I am no where near the editing part. Can't I just
move pics to a highlight folder first? We'll be talking editing
later right?!
[ Sabine H ] for those of you with PSE - I recommend the book -
Photoshop Elements 8.0 (or 5.0) by Scott Kelby - well organized,
funny, easy to read and he takes you step by step through everything.
Andy you don't have to read it all at once - just flip to the chapter
or section you need and follow along. It's fabulous - especially
when you want to start editing. PSE also has built in 'help' - you
can click on that, type in your question or topic and it pops right
up (or should)... Haven't seen Kyla's videos yet - I bet they're
amazing, so I'll be checking those out too..
[ annt ] Thanks, Stacy.
[ HeidiM ] Thanks Stacy! So am I right in that right now I should
be moving anything I think I might scrapbook then when it's all
in highlight folders go back and relook and maybe delete or just
mark with higher ratings?
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] I am so stoked to get organizing today!
I had been waiting to do my Highlights folders - think I will tackle
that today...
[ SusiB ] I have PSE7...which book do you recommend?
[ sftbalrcks ] "Will the book explain "Highlight folders"<br
/>
sftbalrcks"
[ sleepyhead ] I'm bouncing back and forth between organizing my
digi and my printed to keep me motivated
[ AprilFL ] Gloria, deeep breath. It's okay. You don't need to edit.
I personally rarely edit anything before I print.
[ Heather Peet ] can we talk more about the W's? I don't want to
beat a dead horse, but i still feel like I don't really *get* it.
[ stacy julian ] Yes, please, please take advantage of Kayla's videos.
They ROCK. There are many, many wonderful resources for learning
digital, but I truly believe Kayla can help you through the basics,
enough to embrace LOM and then you can go back and focus on the
details and fine tune things!
[ MichelleC ] SusiB - The Missing Manual, they update it for each
release
[ Gloriak ] So does that mean the photos will be in several locations
on my computer as well as possibly being in my binders, storage
drawers and maybe even already scrapped? I was hoping this class
would eliminate that.
[ Tilly-Loo ] The only editing I do is to remove red eye.
[ AprilFL ] just highlights . . . and I don't think stacy plans
on addressing editing at all in class. This is mainly organization.
[ Barb in AK ] "rickrackgirl---I have iphoto (probably the
'07 version)<br />
Works great for my storage--I wouldn't update--Save some $$ :-)"
[ Buglet ] April- so glad to hear you say that as I have not really
entered the "editting" world yet. I WOULD love
to take out some of the clutter in the background of some pics though!
[ MichelleC ] The USB flash drives in the pre-handout, is that just
for the seasonal highlight folders? If not covered yet, I can wait.
:)
[ sleepyhead ] sftblrcks - Photo Freedom explains the highlight
folders in detail too
[ AprilFL ] Buglet, all in time. I do enjoy doing *some* editing
now, but I only just started. It's just not really a part of LOM.
[ nonnysbooks ] My answer to getting rid of the clutter in the background....I
took an organizing workshop and permanently removed the clutter
from my house...now it CAN'T show up in the pics
[ SusiB ] Michell C...Missing Manual...new to PSE
[ rick rack girl ] Barb, my problem is that I can't get help from
the Apple friends because my version is so old and now everything
has changed. I just want some help and I know I can do it.
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] I get almost all the 5 W's - I rock at the
Who, and the When. But I really have trouble identifying the Why
sometimes...
[ ckcgreen ] If I were to upgrade to a newer version of PSE, would
I lose the tag information and rating information or will that information
carry over to a new edition?
[ sftbalrcks ] sleepyhead - great thanks I read it awhile ago, but
will look again
[ Tilly-Loo ] The 5 W's.... I think the point here is to examine
which of the W's are represented in your pages... are you religiously
including some and not others? Are you including the ones that are
important to you?
[ annt ] nonnysbooks--funny!
[ AmySJ ] I think the editing part would depends on the type of
photographer you are (not quality wise but how photography fits
in your life) and perhaps the type of shooting you do and a workflow
that works for you. I purge and edit before moving into folders
into regular folders- it's part of my photography hobby though and
not my scrapbooking one. . . of course, they intersect at times
with why I shoot and once edited but that middle part is really
all about photography.
[ nanarose ] on the W's. look at your layouts and write down on
the sticky note, which of them are there. Like does it show who,
when where, why and what. then note which ones are most often missing.
[ MichelleC ] For PSE there is a book called The Missing Manual
for PSE (they have one for each version). If you search on Amazon,
you should be able to find it.
[ Heather Peet ] it's the "why" that really throws
me - i started a post in "Lesson 1" in the forums,
but it's still not clicking
[ Tilly-Loo ] More on 5 W's... when I make a page now (LOM alum)
I think VERY briefly about the 5 W's. They are not always ALL included
on every page, but I do pause and think... are the W's *I* want
to talk about represented here? Will my great-grandkids wonder about
something? (And, do I care about that on this LO?)
[ Barb in AK ] Rickrackgirl---ooops! If Stacy says "buy",
follow her advice. I only use iphoto for STORAGE...Editing and such
takes place in my PSE program.
[ sleepyhead ] thanks for the tip TillyLoo
[ SusiB ] MichellC.Thank You!
[ Gloriak ] I want to be able to take a photo store it on my computer,
print it, scrap it, and be done with it. That gonna happen right.
After this class, I won't be thinking is in this folder on the computer,
or maybe its here or there or already printed, or in this binder
or maybe that drawer. I just want limited possible locations.
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] The "why" is why that
memory is important to you correct?
[ Lea S ] Good tip TillyLoo
[ rick rack girl ] thanks Barb. I do want to use it for everything.
[ stacy julian ] "Heather, <br />
Sure. W's are a way for your to quickly analyze (primarily) your
journaling. I mainly want you to look back and observe your habitual
tendencies to (let's say) not talk about WHY you choose to scrapbook
something, or leave out names of people and places that might be
helpful to someone in the future. The 5W's (and journaling) as we
move forward are very helpful as you choose what to emphasize with
a group of photos. You will become (with LOM in place) more intentional
about what you scrap. You will think I want to emphasize WHERE we
are and WHY vs. just focusing on pictures and cute product. You
will select certain pictures from an event and know that you want
to journal the PEOPLE that are there and WHY you have a relationship
with them. LOM will help you move past the 'event' and explore other
aspects/stories hidden in the photos. Does that help?"
[ Caroline E ] I have a question about the "why"-
many times, I feel like the "why" is implied -
it is a holiday, for example. I get the sense that it may be more
about putting my own meaning - for example - adding journaling like"our
holiday tradition is to decorate the tree the weekend before Christmas".
I am understanding this right?
[ stacy julian ] Gloriak -- you're in the right place my friend!
[ scrapbookgirl71 ] Thank you, Stacy & April for all the
info! I've got to get to a Basketball game! Have a great day, everyont
out there in LOM World!
[ sleepyhead ] bye scrapbookgirl71
[ Lea S ] Enjoy scrapbbok girl!
[ embracelife ] Caroline, even more could be what it means to you
to decorate the tree, Why did you start certain traditions etc?
[ twinsmk5 ] makes sense embracelife good info
[ Heather Peet ] yes caroline, this is exactly my problem, i feel
it's implied, i don't ever do a 'why' on any of my pages
[ Caroline E ] Embracelife - thanks! That is a really good idea!
[ stacy julian ] Caroline E -- yes. Again, notice trends. For example
it might be a habit of yours to let the WHY be implied and you might
decide, looking back that you want to spell things out more often.
As you implement LOM and enrich your photo organization you'll be
able to find the photos that will help you emphasize the things
you most WANT to emphasize.
[ SusiB ] Thanks Ladies...you've all been very helpful...off to
have lunch with DH and then a little LOM shopping! Storage binders,
lable maker, etc...
[ pennyscraps ] I got to talking to my mom and forgot this! Will
look forward to the transcript! Good morning everyone! Looking forward
to my sticky exercise today.
[ sftbalrcks ] "Well, with 25+ inches of snow and more falling,
I'm heading up to my scraproom to get busy. Have fun everyone!<br
/>
sftbalrcks"
[ Lea S ] Sounds like a good day SusiB. Bye
[ stacy julian ] OK girls. I've got to get started on my Saturday.
Thanks for chatting. See you on the boards!
[ embracelife ] even more, what do you hope your kids remember about
decorating the tree (or other traditions) , where do these traditions
take you emotionally. If you were seeing a picture of a loved one
from years ago by the christmas tree, what would you want to know
about what they are thinking?
[ Caroline E ] Thanks for all of the insights! I'm off to shovel
snow - we have more than a foot and it's still coming.
[ Heather Peet ] i'm buried in snow too! i guess it's a scrappy
day! :)
[ twinsmk5 ] i need to leave have to pick up DH's car
[ Tilly-Loo ] Caroline E -- enjoy the exercise!
[ sleepyhead ] snow day equals scrap day!
[ nonnysbooks ] Let's see if this helps at all...our extended family
has an annual cookie day at Christmas time...a picture of my grown
nephews baking cookies captures the what, could put the date and
their names to capture when and who...but why do we have cookie
day? The journaling would tell how we started that tradition (their
parents needed a place to drop them off so they could Christmas
shop, and I needed to get my baking done) - That's the why
[ Sabine H ] Thanks Stacy & April.... and everyone. This
has been fun. Have a great day - I'm off to work.
[ vanessa23 ] Have a good weekend everyone!
[ scrapbookenthusiast ] Thanks so much Stacy! Have a good day everyone!
:)
[ AprilFL ] excellent Nonny!
[ embracelife ] Snow day here too, a friend invited the kids over
to sled. Guess that just will leave me alone, awwwwww :)
[ Meggie ] Thanks Stacy and April and everyone for an interesting
and informative morning.
[ lwestphal ] Lots of good info! :) Thanks. . enjoy your weekend
everyone.
[ AmySJ ] Thanks everyone! Off to finish my DYL layout and then
a trip into the past for this week's assignments here.
[ AprilFL ] bye everyone! See ya on the boards :) Happy Saturday!
[ Tilly-Loo ] Thanks Stacy and April and LOM'ers! I am SO inspired
and revved up.
[ nanarose ] nonnybrooks-definitely. I love that you would include
the why.
[ Gloriak ] Thanks all! I'm off to figure out picassa a little more
and beef up my highlights folder!
[ sleepyhead ] have a great weekend everyone - I'm pumped up to
do more sorting & purging!
[ nanarose ] bye all-off to get busy |
