Adventures in Scrapbooking: Go Hybrid

Hybrid scrapbooking, in the most basic terms is to utilize digital elements on a traditional paper layout. Most scrapbookers do utilize their computers, but are you making the most of your time and resources?

Masks, brushes, transparencies, page templates, word art, and all the other digital elements can seem overwhelming but really they're no different than their paper counterparts. With some understanding of how things work and some simple techniques to get things created, you can harness the wonders of the digital realm to enhance your paper pages.

Instructor May Flaum is a veteran Big Picture teacher and long time crafter. She is one of the authors of Paper + Pixels: Scrapbook Layouts, has been published in numerous idea books and magazines, and has taught scrapbooking classes for years. May is a self described "paper girl" who dabbles in digital techniques with the sole purpose of printing out her creations to utilize in traditional layouts. Each week May will focus in on a different product and topic for hybrid scrapbooking and show students new layouts, big tips, ideas and much more. Students can easily work at their own pace and May's content is designed to be utilized long after class has ended, adding even more value to this class.

What you'll be doing:
This course is focused on scrapbook layouts, 12" x 12" layouts to be specific, though all of the ideas and most of her page designs can easily be converted to other sizes. May has designed this class so that it is flexible and can appeal to all levels and styles of scrapbookers.

Each week there will be a different focus and May will share some ideas for using those products on your layouts through tutorials and layout examples. She will offer suggestions as well as a weekly assignment.

Program and printing requirements:
May will show you ideas (both written and audio/visual) for hybrid scrapbooking utilizing both PSE8 and Microsoft Word. If you have any version of Photoshop or Word you can enjoy class. Though having both would be ideal, it's totally optional!

You will need to be able to print out some digitally created items (such as tags, journaling, titles, photos, etc).at home, or use a digital printing service. May will be utilizing 8 1/2" x 11" paper, so a wide format printer isn't needed.

May's class includes:

  • Colorful main handout each week filled with layouts, step-by-step instructions, ideas and big tips for hybrid scrapbooking
  • A different digital product download each week. Digital artists include:
  • Weekly audio-visual presentations that include step-by-step instruction and ideas
  • Weekly designer interviews delivered via e-mail
  • Weekly reminder e-mails when the classroom is updated
  • Master supply list with live links to product resources
  • Pre-class handout and audio-visual presentation to help you prepare for class, available in the classroom upon registration
